Endoscopy

An endoscopy, sometimes also called “a scope”, is a procedure that uses a thin, camera-equipped tube to examine the inside of the digestive tract. It is commonly used to help doctors diagnose, monitor, and treat a range of medical conditions.

Dr. Liu Hennessey performs a variety of routine diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures at VGH and UBC Hospital, such as:

  1. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD, also known as “gastroscopy” or “upper endoscopy”)
  2. Colonoscopies
  3. Flexible sigmoidoscopy

Please note that a referral from a medical professional is required for an endoscopy with Dr. Liu Hennessey. Please have your Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner send the referral via fax to the number listed on our contact page.

Frequently Asked Questions about Endoscopy

  • What type of anesthesia is used for colonoscopies?

Dr. Liu Hennessey will use conscious sedation for your procedures. This means you’ll be awake and able to respond, but the medication will help you relax and feel more comfortable with minimal discomfort.

  • Can I have general anesthesia, or “be put completely out”, during my procedures?

No. General anesthesia and deep sedation both require the presence of an Anesthesiologist to monitor your airway and breathing. If you have had trouble with conscious sedation in the past and think you require deeper sedation, please speak with your Family Physician or Nurse Practitioner. They can refer you to a Gastroenterologist or Surgeon who works with an Anesthesiologist during endoscopy procedures.

  • Where does the endoscopy procedure take place?

Endoscopy procedures can be either at VGH or at UBC Hospital. Please read your instruction email very carefully and contact us if you are unsure.

VGH: Go to the information desk on the first floor at 899 West 12th Ave., Vancouver. Then proceed to “Daybed” on the ground level in the Jim Pattison Pavilion VGH.

UBC Hospital: Check in at the information desk on the Ground Floor in the Koerner Pavilion, 2211 Wesbrook Mall, Vancouver. You’ll be directed to turn right and go to “Gastroenterology”.

  • When will I be ready for pick-up after my procedure?

You will be ready for pick-up approximately one hour after the end of your procedure. Hospital staff will call your driver. Please note that the procedure time and pick-up time may be changed last minute due to various factors within the hospital.

  • Do I need to take time off, or is there any “down time” after my endoscopy procedure?

When sedation is used, you may not drive or operate heavy machinery, and should not engage in important decision making within 24 hours of your procedure. You may resume your regular activities and diet as soon as you feel comfortable, usually later the same day.
